Sisters of the Humility of Mary
2020 JUBILARIANS
Sister Mary Hurley, HM
75th Jubilee
Sister Mary Hurley (formerly Sister Ellen Francis) currently volunteers as rapid response coordinator for the Cleveland InterReligious Task Force on Central America and for Common Ground’s Earth Camp program in Oberlin, Ohio.
Sister Mary began her years of ministry in education as a teacher and administrator at several Catholic high schools in northeastern Ohio. She became involved in education/outreach ministry in Cleveland and was the first director of the West Side Catholic Center. She has served as coordinator of peace and justice education/advocacy in Cleveland and in San Antonio, Texas.
She has also ministered with refugees and migrants in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas and in Indiantown, Fla. As staff assistant at Common Ground: The Cindy Nord Center for Renewal in Oberlin, her ministry focused on Earth and environmental education.
She gratefully celebrates the gifts of love, support and challenge from all who have shared her life’s journey.
Sister Toby Lardie, HM
50th Jubilee
Since 2009, Sister Jean Tobin Lardie (Sister Toby) has served on the leadership team of her community — four years as a council member and since 2013 as the pastoral leader. She previously served as a teacher and principal in Catholic elementary schools and did parish youth work and religious education.
From 1986 to 1995 she ministered as a member of the Cleveland Diocesan Mission Team in La Libertad, El Salvador. She served another nine years at the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas, until 2006. From 2007 until 2013 she served part time on the staff of the Collaborative to End Human Trafficking in northeastern Ohio.
“Being in the midst of violence and poverty and seeing the worst that humanity can do opened my eyes to see the seeds and the flowers of the best that people offer, many times through simple gestures of goodness,” Sister Toby says. “I’m filled with gratitude and blessed with amazing hope and promise for what God’s plan holds in the future.”
