Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh
2024 JUBILARIANS
Sister Evelyn Dettling, OSB
70th Jubilee
Sister Evelyn Dettling was born in Canton, Ohio, and has been involved in many ministries over the years, including co-founding the Appalachian ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh, as director for the Glenmary Commission on Justice, and as director of the Benedictine Senior Center. After the Community moved to Bakerstown, Sister worked at St. Athanasius Education and Community Center until 2023.
Currently, Sister Evelyn is the director of the Benedictine Oblates and shares directorship of the Benedictine Leadership and Coach Training Program for Women in Faith-based Ministries.
Her wish list for the world includes her desire for reverence of the universe while living in ways that would make our world safe for all living beings. She says, “I pray that we come to see the face of God in all that is around us; seek peace and pursue it every day in every way.”
Sister Corinee Moeller, OSB
70th Jubilee
Sister Corinne Moeller joined the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh after high school. She was drawn to the Benedictine prayer life and style of community-living.
After earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, she taught for 24 years. In 1978, Sister Corinne was assigned to outreach in Fleming-Neon Kentucky, where she tutored children and became a buyer for the local Emergency Food Bank.
Back in Pittsburgh, she served for 12 years as the outreach specialist for the Benedictine Center ministry. Presently, Sister does internal community ministries.
“Kentucky touched my life, deepened my feelings, and the empathy in me,” Sister Corinne says. “It’s not about “us.” It’s about others. We need God in our lives. It’s only then that we see the needs of others and truly understand the circumstances that created those needs.
“Saint Benedict’s Holy Rule says the Rule is only a beginning. My life has been full of ‘beginnings.’”
Sister Karen Brink, OSB
60th Jubilee
Sister Karen began her ministry at St. Teresa of Avila in Perrysville (presently Our Lady of Mount Carmel), as teacher, principal, director of religious education, and social minister. She also taught at St. Pius X, St. Athanasius, Donora Catholic, Jeannette, and Greensburg Central Catholic. She served as principal in Canton, Ohio; Scottdale, Pa.; and at St. Bartholomew.
Since 2014, Sister Karen has served as Prioress of her Community. She has been described as “firm, fair, and fun.” She absolutely loves sports on every level, especially Pittsburgh’s Pirates and Steelers.
Through the three pillars of Benedictine life — prayer, community and ministry — Sister believes “that prayer sustains me, ministry enlivens me, and the support of the Community enables me to live my life.”
Reflecting on her religious life, Sister Karen states, “During my 60 years, I have encountered the most wonderful people. They are gifts, and I am blessed!”
