Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh

2024 JUBILARIAN

Sister Michelle Farabaugh, OSB
70th Jubilee

Sister Michelle (Carole) Farabaugh was born in Carrolltown, Pa., and entered the Benedictine Community in 1952. She is celebrating 70 years of monastic profession.

Sister Michelle has been involved in diverse ministries and especially loved her work in campus ministry at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, helping college students wrestle with challenging questions. Her keen intelligence, theological expertise and compassion equipped her to respond clearly and without judgment to their dilemmas.

Years later, she served as a psychiatric social worker at St. Francis Hospital. She also spent time with Operation Safety Net, bringing help to people living on the streets of Pittsburgh. Recognized as a responsible leader, the Benedictine Community elected Sister Michelle as prioress for two eight-year terms. Following that, she worked for UPMC, helping discharged psychiatric patients access and benefit from outpatient care.

Now in her retirement years, she works in the Benedictine Office of Community Advancement. “Life as a Benedictine has been extremely fulfilling,” Sister Michelle says. “It has enabled me to move toward and fulfill my aspirations.”
